Uzbek citizen Nikita Sklyuyev was extradited from Ukraine to the United States in connection with charges of stealing millions of dollars in cryptocurrency.
According to the Department of Justice, on June 26, Nikita Andreevich Sklyuyev, aka Valery Dorozhkin, 37, from Uzbekistan, who was previously extradited from Ukraine, was brought to trial on charges of fraud using electronic means of communication and fraudulent use of unauthorized access devices.
If proven guilty, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $ 250,000.
According to the indictment, in June 2018, for sale through the Apple App Store, Sklyuyev presented a software application "EOSIO Wallet Explorer", which allegedly represented a cryptocurrency wallet, but in fact it was malicious software to steal the private key of a cryptocurrency user.
In September 2018, a citizen of the Western District of New York (victim) purchased the EOSIO Wallet Explorer app and installed it on his iPhone. After the victim entered his private key, Sklyuev obtained illegal access to the Victim's cryptocurrency wallet, which contained approximately 2,092,395,5356 EOS cryptocurrencies, the value of which at that time was estimated at approximately 11.8 million US dollars.
A little later, Sklyuev changed the key to the victim's wallet, and in February 2019, he transferred the EOS cryptocurrency from her wallet to many other online wallets that were under his control.
The investigation is being conducted by the FBI, and the prosecution followed Sklyuyev's successful extradition from Ukraine on June 20, 2024. The Department of Justice's Office of International Relations worked with the Romanian and Ukrainian authorities to secure his arrest and extradition.
