The FBI and CrowdStrike database hacker has finally been arrested.
During Operation Data Breach, Brazilian police detained a USDoD hacker involved in hacking into national databases and FBI systems. The attacker, also acting under the pseudonym EquationCorp, has been carrying out high-profile cyberattacks for several years, stealing and publishing confidential information on hacker forums.
Among its most notorious attacks is the hacking of the InfraGard portal, which is used to share cyber threat information between the FBI and critical organizations in the United States. In another incident, the National Public Data (NPD) hack, the personal data and social security numbers of hundreds of millions of U.S. citizens were leaked. According to the police, USDoD distributed the data of 80,000 InfraGard participants on specialized websites.
The hacker remained out of the reach of law enforcement agencies for a long time. However, the situation changed after USDoD attacked CrowdStrike and posted its internal list of threats online, which drew additional attention to the cybercriminal.
Following a CrowdStrike-related leak, Brazilian publisher Techmundo obtained an anonymous report purporting to reveal the identity of the attacker. The document claimed that a 33-year-old Brazilian resident named Luan G. Shortly thereafter, the hacker himself confirmed the reliability of this data in an interview with HackRead, adding that he lives in Brazil. He also noted that information about his identity was known to a number of companies, including intel421, even before the attack on InfraGard.
Brazil's Federal Police likely used this information to locate the suspect. Operation Data Breach ended with the arrest of the hacker in the city of Belo Horizonte on October 16. As part of the investigation, searches were also carried out and evidence was seized showing the detainee's involvement in the sale of data to the Federal Police on May 22, 2020 and February 22, 2022.
