The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has finally acknowledged the leak of photographic material taken during testing of the capabilities of the facial recognition system. The photographs have appeared on darkweb sites.
Apparently, the Perceptics company was responsible for the cyber incident, collecting all the data from the system, which included photographs of travelers' faces, license plates and insurance information.
Initially, the US BIM denied the fact of the leak in every possible way, but later it became clear that the information surfaced on the dark web. In total, unknown persons stole (PDF) 184 thousand photos, at least 19 were subsequently published on the "dark web".
We are talking about pictures taken at the borders of the United States. Cameras capture every person and every vehicle that crosses these borders to identify criminals or terrorists trying to infiltrate America.
To process such data, the Department of Homeland Security hired contractors, one of which was Perceptics. Employees of this organization processed images of faces and vehicles crossing the US border.
It is Perceptics who is responsible for leaking confidential information to the dark web.
