Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs warned UK taxpayers against a new phishing scam that offers unwitting Internet users bogus tax discounts. According to the UK tax agency it ran across 83,000 scam emails last month with 10,000 reports sent to HMRC about attempted fraud on one day only.

Targets were advised of that they had become eligible for the tax refund and in order to get it they needed just to provide their credit card or bank details. If a victim agreed his/her account was defrauded and details were sold to other scammers.

The scheme was acting from different websites which in turn operate just for 20 minutes before changing domain name. HMRC said it was "taking action to disrupt these attacks and... a number of scam networks have been shut down".
