A modern smart card with a magnetic stripe is the most popular and reliable method of personalization. Information is recorded using a special code, which is read by the reader during use. High-quality magnetic media resist destructive factors and do not demagnetize. However, the myths that exist in society say otherwise. Are they true?

The role of magnetic stripe on cards

All information about the owner is contained in the magnetic stripe on the card . It is needed to automate processing in the service sector. Although a small amount of data is stored on the strip, there is enough space for discounts, passes, advertising, and identification options. If stored properly, it will last a long time, but you need to be careful. It is better not to leave such a card in the sun, not to heat it, and not to store it near electrical appliances.

“We didn't expect that magnetic stripe cards could also be used as hotel keys. Our insight was not so strong,” Jerome Svigals (1974).

Encoding data onto a card allows you to optimize many processes. Just one touch and the information goes to the computer. No matter how they try to supplant these methods of personification, a card with a magnetic stripe remains the most practical. Moreover, its price is quite reasonable. If you order a smart device of this type from a trusted printing company, the magnetic strip will be characterized by a high degree of protection and wear resistance.

The physical principles that underlie magnetic stripe

Back in 1960, it was possible for the first time to record information on a card using a stripe. For this purpose, magnetic tape and metal particles were used. Then the data was magnetized onto tapes for further reading by readers.

When creating modern magnetic cards, two types of tapes are used: high-coercivity (HiCo) and low-coercivity (LoCo). The main difference between them is the current used to magnetize the device. For important cards, the first technology is chosen, because HiCo provides a higher degree of reliability and security.

Examples of magnetic stripe myths

Modern smart cards of this type have 2-3 tracks on which its number, expiration date, client name, etc. are recorded. Discount options may have 1 track, because they contain less confidential data. Although they say that it is very easy for a fraudster to read information or get a copy, this is not true. You can only copy a magnetic stripe with a skimmer; in addition, you can additionally protect cards with a chip, signature, hologram, or barcode.

False statements about magnetic stripe cards:
  • you can visually examine the encrypted information;
  • a magnetic field can erase/change data;
  • a neodymium magnet spoils the card;
  • the strip quickly demagnetizes;
  • little information is included.
All these statements are myths. To prevent this from happening, the contactless product must be of good quality. When ordering printing of a card with a magnetic stripe for advertising, authorization, loyalty programs, access control, etc., trust only professionals
