Tor Project and Tails have announced a merger that will allow the projects to improve collaboration and join forces to protect users from digital surveillance.
The Tor Project is a global non-profit organization that develops online privacy solutions, and Tails is a portable operating system that protects against tracking by the Tor network.
Incorporating Tails into the Tor Project allows for easier collaboration, increased resilience, reduced costs, and improved user training. The association aims to strengthen the ability of organizations to protect people around the world from online surveillance and censorship.
At the end of 2023, Tails approached the Tor Project with the idea of joining forces, as the current structure could not cope with the growing tasks. Instead of expanding on its own, Tails decided to join the Tor Project to take advantage of established operational processes and focus on developing its core product, the Tails operating system.
The merger was a logical step, given the long history of cooperation between Tor and Tails. Tails was first announced in 2008 on the Tor mailing list, and since 2015, the developers of both projects have been actively interacting. Recently, Tails became a Tor sub-grantee, which also contributed to the convergence of the teams.
The integration of the two projects will expand the capabilities of Tor's educational programs, which have focused primarily on the Tor browser. Following the merger, it will be possible to cover a wider range of privacy and security needs. The merger will also increase the visibility of Tails among users who may not have been familiar with the operating system.
The merger, according to representatives of both teams, will help to better allocate resources, accelerate the integration of new functions and increase the ability to respond in a timely manner to emerging digital threats.
