As part of the regulatory act, social networks were given 24 hours to disclose their actions to remove misinformation.

European Commissioner for Industry Thierry Breton has given TikTok 24 hours to provide details of measures taken to combat the spread of disinformation on the platform following the outbreak of the conflict in Israel.

Breton's letter to TikTok CEO Shaw Zee Chiu was first revealed by Reuters. Earlier this week, Breton sent similar emails to Elon Musk, the owner of Company X, and Mark Zuckerberg of Meta Platforms. Later, the text of the letter was published on the Bluesky social platform.

Facebook said it had removed hundreds of accounts linked to Hamas and taken steps to remove or label tens of thousands of materials after the conflict in Israel broke out.

In his letter to TikTok, Breton claimed that he had evidence that the platform was used to distribute illegal content and misinformation in the EU related to the situation in Israel.

The EU Commissioner for Industry stressed that the rules for content moderation are clearly spelled out in the Digital Services Act (DSA) and in his letter pointed out certain obligations.

The main purpose of the DSA introduced in 2021 is to give EU regulators the ability to control large Internet platforms and introduce stricter mechanisms for removing "fake news" and "offensive content". At the same time, tech giants will be responsible for detecting illegal content and the removal algorithms used, and will also have to comply with certain transparency-related requirements.

In addition, an EU law came into force in August aimed at combating the potentially harmful influence of social media on children and adolescents. The new rules, which are part of the DSA, oblige major platforms such as TikTok, Facebook* and YouTube to open their systems to the European Commission's review and prove that companies are doing everything possible to ensure that their products do not harm children.
