During the two-year investigation, nine people were convicted, five were charged, and three died.

The courts handed down sentences to nine participants of the mass attack on one of the largest Russian marketplaces Wildberries, which occurred in May 2021. The attackers managed to steal more than 385 million rubles from the company's accounts, using a payment system vulnerability. Five others have been charged and are awaiting trial. All convicted persons will have to compensate for the damage caused.

According to RBC, trials are held in the cities where the crime was committed: Moscow, Kazan and Chuvashia. The organizers of the fraudulent scheme were previously convicted, and some groups of other participants consist of spouses and close relatives. During the two years of investigation, three suspects died, and several others left the country.

The scheme of stealing funds was as follows: fraudsters opened their own store on the site, filled it with non-existent digital goods at inflated prices: certificates for tourist trips, skydiving, buggy rides, etc. After that, they made out the purchase of their own product on the Wildberries portal, but did not make the payment, taking advantage of the imperfection of the payment program. The internal Wildberries system recorded the fact of purchase and transferred its own funds to fraudulent suppliers for non-existent goods, assuming that the money for the order had already been credited to the company's account. Scammers, having received money to their current accounts, cashed them out.

One of these cases occurred in Kazan, where spouses Yulia and Vladimir Belyaev sold fictitious services on Wildberries: "A certificate for a trip on a cruise ship", "An exclusive trip to Antarctica" and similar "trips" to the Himalayas, Mount Everest and Siberia worth 150 thousand rubles. After that, the company made purchases of 171 services for a total amount of RUB 23 million through related parties. The court sentenced Belyaeva to a suspended sentence of three years, and her husband-to five years in a high-security penal colony. The couple will also be required to return the full amount of damage to the marketplace.

For the first time, such a scheme was used in April 2021: several transactions were made for small amounts. After a major attack in May of the same year, Wildberries discovered forgery and in June filed an application with the Department of Internal Affairs for the Northern Administrative District of Moscow to open a criminal case on the fact of fraud on a particularly large scale.

A representative of Wildberries said that the investigation of the criminal case continues, measures are being taken to detain the remaining participants in the theft. He noted that the identities and connections of all those who have not yet been brought to justice have been established. According to RBC, over two years of investigation, 50 participants in the criminal scheme were found. Some participants in the fraudulent scheme themselves turned to Wildberries with explanations that they were misled by intruders, and expressed their readiness to compensate for the damage and cooperate with the investigation. In this case, the courts chose a non-custodial sentence. The representative of the marketplace did not disclose the exact amount of damages, referring to the interests of the investigation.
