One of the recent trends at a meeting of the Federation Council Commission on Information Policy and Interaction with the Media was the active involvement of children and adolescents in cybercriminal activities.
The number of incidents involving them has increased 74 times over the past two years.
As Sberbank Vice President for Cybersecurity Sergey Lebed noted in his speech, Russians are called by 400 criminal call centers. The amount of funds stolen from Russian citizens, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, amounted to 90 billion rubles in 2020 and 160 billion in 2023.
In 2024, according to Sberbank forecasts, the amount of stolen goods will amount to 250 billion rubles. In 2025, this value, according to Sberbank, may grow by another 20%.
Vladislav Grigorov, a representative of the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Russian Federation, provided data on the number of appeals related to fraud. For 9 months of 2024, it increased by almost a third in annual terms.
Sergey Lebed also called the expansion of the number of drops - accomplices in the fraudulent scheme, whose accounts are used by attackers in their schemes, a new trend. Millions of people are involved in this activity, 60% of whom are under the age of 24. Teenagers are increasingly being attracted as drops, their number has increased 74 times over the past two years.
Alexander Vurasko, Development Director of the SolarAURA Digital Threat Monitoring Center of the Solar Group of Companies, in a comment to Izvestia, linked the active involvement of teenagers with the fact that young people do not understand that they are doing something illegal due to gaps in educational work:
"Unfortunately, educating children very often concerns cyberbullying, involvement in various destructive communities. And the fact that you can secure a criminal record in two clicks without having time to feel like a "cool hacker" is very rarely talked about."
