What do you expect to see when you pick up the world's most famous banknotes - the dollar, euro, pound, Swiss franc, yen or Chinese yuan?
What do famous banknotes look like?
Some not only did not hold the world's most famous banknotes in their hands, but also don’t know what they look like. In this review, PaySpace Magazine will show you what these currencies look like and share interesting facts about popular denominations.
Symbol: $
Images: politicians, government buildings, "Declaration of Independence" painting, US national emblem.
Interesting:
Today, all American banknotes depict male presidents and political leaders of the United States. However, in the next few years, a portrait of a woman may appear on the US dollar.
The US Treasury Department announced that the new $ 20 bills will feature African American anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman. She will become the first woman to appear on American banknotes in over a century. And the first black person in the American currency in the entire history of its existence.
Before her, women appeared on American banknotes only twice - Former First Lady Martha Washington, depicted on a silver one dollar certificate issued in 1891-1896, and the Indian princess Pocahontas - her image was present on a 20-dollar bill from 1865 to 1869.

Images: bridges, architectural ensembles, map of the European Union, portrait of the Greek goddess Europe
Interesting:
The European banknotes are only 15 years old, however, they managed to reflect the key milestones in the history of the region. This can be verified by examining the bridges depicted on the banknotes. All of them are a stylized display of the main architectural styles for different periods of history - from classic to modern.
Not everyone knows, however, that these bridges did not actually exist ... until recently. In 2014, a Dutch designer made fictional bridges a reality by slinging them over a small canal in a dormitory area of Rotterdam. They are all pedestrian.

Images: Queen Elizabeth II, distinguished citizens of the United Kingdom, landmarks, stories on various topics
Interesting:
Not only politicians and public figures are depicted on British pounds. At different times, portraits of writers (William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens), scientists (Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin), inventors (James Watt) appeared on banknotes.
And since 2020, a self-portrait of the famous British artist will appear for the first time on the British £ 20 banknote, already plastic by that time. Based on the results of a public poll, it was decided that he would be William Turner, the author of numerous landscapes in the romantic style. One of the artist's most outstanding works, The Last Voyage of the Brave Ship, will appear on the reverse of the banknote, along with a quote and the author's signature.

Images: artists - Swiss architects, composers, painters, sculptors, writers.
Interesting:
Unlike most banknotes, the Swiss franc has a vertical design. This solution was proposed for the first time in 1995. Since then, longitudinal images have been used in the development of all banknotes, including the new, ninth series of banknotes, which will replace the old one by 2019.
The first banknote of the issue (50 francs) has already been put into circulation. Displaying the theme of the entire new series - "Switzerland is open to the world" - the banknote focuses on the opportunities that this country has to offer. To display this motive, the designers chose dandelion and wind.
Symbol: ¥
Images: Mao Zedong, the coat of arms of China, landscapes and architectural ensembles, flowers.
Interesting:
The maximum denomination of the Chinese national currency is 100 yuan ($ 14.5). Therefore, the Chinese who are preparing to make a major purchase need to literally carry a bag of money with them.

Images: Famous people of Japan, Fuji volcano, sakura blossom, irises, phoenix statue.
Interesting: It seems that Japan is not chasing the attractive appearance of its national currency. It is enough for it that the yen is the third largest currency in the world in terms of trading volume on international exchanges after the dollar and the euro.
The last time the yen was redesigned was in 2004. And it is not yet known when Japanese designers will again take up the development of new money.
In total, there are three denominations of banknotes in circulation - 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 yen. They depict a scientist, writer and translator.
The most famous banknotes in the world are not necessarily the most interesting ones. Who has the most beautiful money - read our review.
