Elon Musk's SpaceX company is once again setting new standards in the field of satellite Internet, launching new versions of its satellites that can communicate using lasers. As Starlink confirmed in a tweet , a new generation of satellites was successfully launched into orbit last week.

Three years ago, the space Internet took a huge step forward with the launch of the first Starlink satellites. Since then, the service has grown rapidly thanks to SpaceX's reusable Falcon 9 rockets and a growing number of users looking to connect to the Internet from remote locations. The service, which had more than a million users at the beginning of 2023, is actively developing against the backdrop of growing competition in this area.

The first Starlink satellites with laser communication were launched back in 2021. They provided Internet services in Alaska, where installing ground stations was problematic. The stations serve as intermediaries between Starlink satellites and data centers. However, a new technology called Optical Intersatellite Links allows satellites to communicate with each other directly using lasers, which increases internet speed and reduces latency.

According to Starlink, the network will be equipped with more than 8,000 such lasers, providing communication between satellites at a distance of thousands of kilometers with millimeter accuracy. Data transmission on each such laser channel can reach speeds of 100 Gbit/s.

In the future, Starlink plans to expand the use of its services in maritime and air transport. In addition, despite competing with OneWeb, Starlink strives to maintain its leading position by offering fast and reliable Internet access around the world.
