The police eliminated the shadow record holder with a profit of € 12 million.
The Dutch police have completed a major investigation into the international dark-web platform "Bohemia/Cannabia", which was one of the largest and longest-running in history. The special services were able to find the administrators of the service, two of them were arrested.
The investigation was carried out jointly with police officers from Ireland, Great Britain and the United States. At the end of 2022, the Dutch police began to monitor the platform, as several of its servers were located in the Netherlands. The platform operated until the end of 2023, but due to technical problems, the administrators staged an "exit scam" - realizing that their activities were under threat, the administrators closed the sites and withdrew user funds, dividing them among themselves.
The police were able to identify the identities of several organizers, one of them was detained in the Netherlands, the other in Ireland. Two cars were also confiscated.
Prohibited substances and hacker services, including DDoS attacks, were sold on Bohemia/Cannabia. The site posted about 82 thousand ads daily, and the number of transactions per month reached 67 thousand. In September 2023, the platform's revenue amounted to 12 million euros, which was a record among similar sites. The profit of the administrators is estimated at 5 million euros.
Some of the sellers on the platform were from the Netherlands. Initial analysis showed that at least 14 thousand transactions totaling 1.7 million euros passed through them. It is expected that after the calculations, the real figure will be much higher. As part of a separate investigation, several Dutch dealers were arrested in June 2023. The police do not rule out new detentions.
During the investigation, two administrators were arrested, one of whom, an Irish citizen, has already appeared before the court in Rotterdam, where it was decided to extend his detention. He was detained at Schiphol Airport on June 27 and was in possession of large amounts of data and bitcoin. During the arrests, more than 8 million euros in cryptocurrency were seized.
While using Drakweb is not a crime in itself, activities on platforms such as Bohemia/Cannabia are against the law. Law enforcement agencies emphasize that the shadow anonymity of the Internet is not as impenetrable as its users may think.
