Fake WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram serve as bait for unwary users…

Popular mobile messengers such as WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram have long been targeted by cybercriminals. Fraudsters create and distribute malicious copies of these applications, misleading users with phishing mailings on social networks, via email and SMS.

According to ESET, in 2021 alone, dozens of cases of fake versions of WhatsApp and Telegram spreading under the guise of updates and mods were recorded.

For example, in 2021, scammers distributed malware disguised as a pink theme for WhatsApp. The program automatically responded to the received messages with phishing links, stealing confidential data of victims.

Dozens of fake websites also distributed malicious applications that intercept information from the clipboard. Users were lured into a trap by fake advertisements and YouTube videos.

Hackers from China recently managed to inject BadBazaar spyware into fake Signal and Telegram. Oddly enough, instant messengers passed security checks in Google Play and Samsung Galaxy Store, and malicious software went unnoticed for a long time.

After installing the malicious messenger, attackers gain access to users ' personal data and banking information, can monitor their actions, encrypt files and demand ransom, use paid services, steal account passwords, and conduct cyber attacks on corporate networks of companies.

To avoid becoming a victim of scammers, experts recommend:
  • Download apps only from official stores
  • Regularly update the operating system and installed programs
  • Before downloading the messenger, check reviews and information about the developer
  • Don't click on suspicious links or install software from unknown sites
  • Use reliable antivirus programs
  • Enable two-factor authentication for accounts

In addition, you should pay attention to the following signs of malicious activity:
  • Suspicious app names and descriptions
  • Sudden appearance of annoying ads
  • Appearance of unfamiliar icons on the device
  • Fast battery drain and slow down your smartphone
  • Sharp increase in mobile traffic usage and bills for communication services

By taking these precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of phishing attacks and cybercriminals.
