In the UK, 39-year-old citizen Robert Westbrook was detained, who is accused of hacker attacks on five public companies in order to obtain confidential information about corporate profits. According to the investigation, these actions allowed him to earn about $ 3.75 million on stock exchange transactions.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Westbrook hacked into companies' systems from January 2019 to August 2020, gaining access to information in front of 14 different company profit publications. Password resets in Office365 accounts that belonged to top managers were used to hack. After gaining access to corporate email, he used automatic email forwarding to his anonymous accounts to keep track of corporate correspondence.

Based on the information received, Westbrook made transactions in the stock market, buying and selling shares before the publication of company earnings reports. U.S. authorities are seeking his extradition to face charges of fraud, insider trading, and computer crimes.

If convicted, Westbrook faces many years in prison on each of the charges. U.S. investigators also reported that he tried to hide his identity by using anonymous email accounts, VPN services, and bitcoin transactions.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is demanding that Westbrook return the $3.75 million received and pay fines, the amount of which has not yet been disclosed.

This case is not the only one in this category of crimes. In September last year, Russian citizen Vladislav Klyushin was sentenced to nine years in prison for a similar scheme with illegal transactions worth about $ 93 million.
