Suspicion falls on the Iranian group Homeland Justice, but what if the threat was internal?

On December 26, the Albanian Parliament announced that it had been subjected to a large-scale cyber attack. Hackers tried to gain access to confidential data of the government information system, which caused a temporary failure in its operation. The statement notes that at the moment there is no information that the attackers managed to get hold of any valuable information and use it for their own purposes. Experts are conducting a thorough investigation of the incident and working to restore the infrastructure.

According to local media reports, one of the country's largest mobile operators and a national airline suffered similar cyber attacks on Monday, although this information has not yet been confirmed from independent sources. Presumably, the organizers of the attacks are the hacker group Homeland Justice, based in Iran.

Recall that in July 2022, Albania already faced a similar incident, the responsibility for which the country's authorities blamed on the Iranian special services. The attack took place against the backdrop of Albania granting asylum to members of the Mujahedin-e Khalq opposition group and was seen as a retaliatory strike by Iran. After that, the countries completely severed diplomatic relations.

Iran's Foreign Ministry denies any involvement in the attacks on Albania. Tehran blames them on the Mujahideen themselves, saying that Iran is regularly attacked by opposition forces.

In June, Albanian authorities raided Mujahideen camps, seizing computer equipment that they said was used for illegal political activities. The Mujahideen are in exile in Albania and have no right to engage in politics.

The United States, NATO and the EU have expressed support for Albania in its standoff with Iran over the issue.
