Forensic experts of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation can identify a criminal even by an indistinct image from CCTV cameras, and even if he has changed his appearance a lot (lost weight or gained weight, began to wear a different hairstyle, etc.).

In the first episode of the series "Miracles of Forensic Science" published on the YouTube channel, the experts of the TFR opened the veil over some of the technologies they use in the investigation of criminal offenses. In particular, criminologists talked about face recognition technology, which they had to resort to in March of this year to catch a sexual maniac who was operating in the doorways.

Cameras of intercoms installed in the entrances recorded the criminal, but the image turned out to be indistinct. Moreover, the main suspect changed his appearance - he lost 20 kg and shaved his head. Using special technologies, experts created a three-dimensional model of a human head and superimposed frames on it, captured by cameras from different angles. As a result, the version of the suspect's guilt was confirmed.

The face recognition technologies used by TFR will help to identify a person, even if he is wrapped up in bulky clothes from head to toe. For example, such a "masquerade" did not save the killer hired to murder an entrepreneur in Tambov from justice. The crime he committed was recorded by a video surveillance camera, but the video did not allow identifying the suspect. With the help of a video-technical examination, the forensic experts of the Investigative Committee managed to determine the height and physique of the offender with an accuracy of a centimeter. With the help of additional investigative measures, the investigation was able to establish the identity of the suspect. As a result, the attacker was caught and confessed to what he had done.
