Can deepfake help a 40-year-old man behind bars?

A man has been convicted of creating sexual images of children using AI in South Korea, the Korea Herald reports, citing local media. The man, aged in his 40s, was charged with violating the Law on the Protection of Children and Adolescents and sentenced to 2.5 years in prison.

According to the prosecutor's office, the man used an "AI-based image creation program" to create about 360 sexual images. It should be noted that the man did not distribute the created images, which were confiscated by the police.

To create the images, the accused used test prompts such as "10 years old", "nude", "child", which allowed the images to be created realistic enough that the court rejected the defense's claims that they could not be considered images of a sexual nature.

The court's decision showed that fake but realistic images of minors created using modern technologies can now be considered sexually offensive content.
