Users are offered to install uBlock Origin Lite or look for an alternative.
Users of the Google Chrome browser faced an unpleasant surprise after the recent update to version 127. Many found an alarming message next to one of the most popular extensions for blocking ads — uBlock Origin.
"uBlock Origin: Support for this extension may end soon. We recommend removing it or replacing it with similar extensions from the Chrome Web Store," the browser warned.
uBlock Origin developers quickly responded to the situation by posting an explanation on GitHub . It turned out that the reason lies in Google's plans to replace the outdated Manifest V2 with the new Manifest V3. For the uninitiated: Manifest is a set of rules that govern how extensions interact with the browser and web pages.
Manifest V3 is designed to improve security, privacy, and speed. It will introduce changes to permission management and restrict the use of certain scripts, such as external ones. Instead of background pages, service workers will now be used, which will help reduce resource consumption.
Preparations for the transition to the new architecture have been underway for a long time and caused a wave of indignation among users and developers. Google had to postpone its plans and make a lot of adjustments to moderate the dissatisfaction. However, even after improvements, Manifest V3 still significantly restricts the capabilities of extensions, especially content blockers.
The creators of uBlock Origin were faced with a difficult choice. They do not plan to release a full version of the extension based on Manifest V3, instead offering a lightweight version-uBlock Origin Lite. The new version retains the priority of reliability and efficiency, but it had to sacrifice some features.
The Chrome Web Store decided not to automatically update uBlock Origin to the Lite version. Users now have a choice: either continue using the current version until the last one, or look for alternatives that are compatible with Manifest V3.
"The Manifest v2 version of uBO will not be automatically replaced by uBOL based on Manifest v3. uBOL is too different from uBO to be replaced unnoticed. You will have to decide for yourself which extension should take the place of uBO, based on your own priorities, " the developers explained.
Google intends to complete the transition to Manifest V3 by the end of 2025. Corporate customers will be able to use Manifest V2-based extensions for another six months after this deadline.
Interestingly, Mozilla, the only major browser developer that does not use Chromium, does not plan to abandon extensions based on Manifest V2. Thanks to this, uBlock Origin will continue to function in Firefox and other browsers.
