Device owners around the world received notifications about potential attacks.
Apple again warns iPhone users about the threat of spyware. The company sent out notifications to device owners in 98 countries around the world, informing them of potential attacks by hired spyware. This is the second time such a campaign has been conducted this year - in April, users in 92 countries received similar warnings.
According to TechCrunch, in the message, the company warns users about an attempt to remotely compromise their iPhone associated with a specific Apple ID. Apple emphasizes that the attack is probably aimed at the user because of his identity or activity, and calls for taking the warning seriously.
Starting in 2021, the tech giant regularly sends such notifications, reaching users in more than 150 countries. The latest wave of warnings came out on Wednesday, but Apple did not disclose the identity of the attackers or the specific countries where users received the notifications.
Users from India were also among the recipients of the latest warnings. In October, Apple sent similar notifications to several Indian journalists and politicians. Later, the human rights organization Amnesty International found traces of Pegasus, an extremely invasive spyware developed by the Israeli company NSO Group, on the iPhone of well - known Indian journalists.
Apple notes that it cannot disclose additional details about how to detect threats, as this may help attackers avoid detection in the future. Interestingly, the company changed the wording in its messages: now instead of "state-sponsored attacks", the term"paid spyware attacks" is used.
