Is the information really in the hands of hackers or is it a bluff?

Hong Kong-based Sphero is facing a major data breach that affected the personal information of more than a million teachers and students.

According to the antivirus review service SafetyDetectives, sensitive data allegedly belonging to Sphero users was stolen and published on the Internet. However, the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) stated that the company had not received any relevant reports about the incident.

Sphero the darknet forum

SafetyDetectives experts have suggested that the hacker found and exploited several vulnerabilities in the Sphero security system, which allowed him to steal confidential information. The forum post does not specify the number of users or the number of files stored in the database. However, one of the forum participants reported that the database contains 1,001,393 rows of data.

The following user data was published on the darknet, among others:
  • full name;
  • email address;
  • date of birth;
  • URL of the profile photo;
  • post;
  • location;
  • biography.

PCPD said it will contact Sphero to find out if the company has any business in Hong Kong and if the data of Hong Kong users is affected. Sphero's official website states that its international office is located in the Kwai Fong area, and there is also a warehouse in the United States.

SafetyDetectives warns that leaked data can be used for further fraud or identity forgery. The SafetyDetectives team contacted Sphero and provided a link to the data leak (possibly to confirm the truth of the leak), while waiting for a response from the company.
