Seoul police have arrested 70 people suspected of manufacturing drugs and selling them for bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies.
According to law enforcement, criminals advertised their drug trafficking services in Telegram messenger chats. They smuggled and distributed various narcotic drugs, including methamphetamine, ketamine and synthetic marijuana. The suspects used raw materials from Vietnam and independently manufactured the drugs in their own laboratory in South Korea.
The group began its illegal activities in September 2023 and sold drugs for bitcoins until June 20, 2024. The profit received by violators of the law exceeded $4.3 million. The police came to the criminals thanks to a local resident, when he reported a suspicious young man walking near the flower beds of a residential complex.
After searching the area, the police found a white powder in the balloon. With the help of CCTV footage, the police tracked down the man. Having confiscated his mobile phone, law enforcement officers were able to track down the details of illegal transactions for cryptocurrencies and reach out to the organizers of the group in Telegram.
About 2,000 places with hidden drugs were identified. A total of 40 kg of banned substances were confiscated. The police also seized bitcoins and cash worth more than $7,200 from criminals. Several members of the criminal group remain at large, including the second "gang leader". It is assumed that he could have fled to the Philippines.
Recently, a California resident was arrested in the United States for selling drugs through the darknet platforms ToRReZ and Dark0de. For money laundering through cryptocurrencies, she faces a life sentence.
