The topic of fraud with bank cards is more relevant today than ever. In one of our articles, such a scheme for stealing card details using pseudo overlays on ATMs, like skimming, was described in detail . At the same time, the victim in most cases is practically defenseless, therefore, each of us can get hooked by an attacker. In this review, we will talk about skimming in stores - one of the options for a popular fraud scheme.
The opportunity to pay by credit card is offered by the absolute majority of bars, restaurants, cafes, shops at gas stations. To read and copy information from a magnetic tape, fraudsters agree in advance with the sellers of such establishments. In this case, an ordinary manual skimmer is used, which in a matter of seconds reads all the necessary data from the victim's card.

How the circuit works
When paying with a bank card, the store seller additionally rolls it through a mini-skimmer. In most cases, the terminal is located near the employee of the establishment, so it is quite problematic to keep track of all the actions. The skimmer, in turn, reads and accumulates all payment information about the cards, which is later used to create a duplicate card and withdraw funds (card number, expiration date, name of the holder, secret code CVV2 / CVC2). It is quite easy to fall for the trick of scammers, you will not suspect anything. Therefore, you must always carefully monitor the actions that the store employees carry out with your card.
After the accumulation of information, the skimmer is transferred to the attacker. Making a clone of the victim's card is just a formality. This is done within a few hours, after which the fraudster has the opportunity to use your money, including for making purchases in the same store where the skimmer was installed.
As for the injured party, one might think that it is only the owner of the card. However, as practice shows, dishonest sellers of the shops where the skimmer was installed also act as a victim. During the investigation, it will not be difficult for law enforcement agencies to prove their guilt. At the same time, the attacker himself, who in the future can use someone else's bank card, will be almost impossible to find and punish. Therefore, in most cases, all the blame for the crime committed falls on the shoulders of the point of sale employee, who, moreover, will have to reimburse the victim for all losses.
Well, the victim will have to block and reissue the compromised card.

How to protect yourself from skimming in stores
In order not to become a victim of skimming in a store or any other trading establishment, you must strictly adhere to the following rules:
  • when paying for purchases in shops and outlets with a bank card, never lose sight of it. For fraudulent actions (copying data from it), a split second will be enough, so be careful;
  • do not put the card into the bill when paying at a restaurant or other institution;
  • do not let store employees take your card away. This is usually done for the so-called consultation with other employees, but at the moment it is just possible to pass the card through the skimmer, which will remain unnoticed by its owner;
  • do not allow store employees to insert the card into devices other than the terminal - watch their movements !;
  • make sure that employees do not take pictures of the card and do not copy information from it;
  • before you enter the PIN-code or sign on the check after making a purchase, check in detail the amount to be debited;
  • When entering your PIN, try to cover your keyboard and hand without any hesitation. This is necessary to protect yourself from the looks of strangers who can see and remember your Personal Identity;
  • immediately after paying for the purchase, demand that the card be returned immediately;
  • activate the SMS-informing service. This will allow you to instantly find out about all attempts to perform transactions on your card;
  • save on your phone the support numbers of the banks whose cards you use. If you are planning a trip abroad, then it will not hurt you to find out the numbers of the support service of international payment systems;
  • at the slightest suspicion of possible fraudulent actions with your bank card, block it until all the circumstances of the fraud are clarified.
