Six-step reframing is one of the most well-known techniques in NLP. If we correlate it with the structure of logical levels, then it works at the level of abilities and capabilities, that is, it helps a person to cope with those of his problems, whose core is located precisely at this logical level. Moreover, this technique is aimed at confirming the correctness of the intention of the behavior. In other words, it relies on a deeper reason behind this behavior, and explains, justifies it. In the technique itself, and in the conversation, it is very important to separate the behavior of a person, which, apparently, is destructive, not suitable for him, and the intention that stands behind this behavior, supports it, performing, as a rule, a useful, protective function or any other.

The therapist, before starting to work with the patient in this technique, must introduce the concept of a part of the personality. It is actively used in it and should already be familiar to the patient before he starts working with his problem. Thus, we create an internal dissociation of parts of the personality for the patient, some other internal reality that stimulates him to trance. And although here we usually do not use formal induction of a trance state, nevertheless, if it occurs, then, as a rule, it is convenient for us, and our task is to maintain it.

The methods of supporting such a state should include the use of mainly those words that you hear in the patient's speech, the ability to speak thoughtfully, with pauses, without distracting the patient from immersion in himself. The very idea of turning the patient into his own personality already contributes to his trance.

Usually, the concept of parts of a personality is introduced as follows. We are talking about the fact that a person has body parts - arms, legs, internal organs that perform certain functions. In other words, one or more functions are assigned to each part of the body, which are combined with the functions of other parts of the body and allow a person to function in full - run, jump, hold and do many other things that are part of the usual set of behavior.

Explaining this, we carefully observe the person, expecting a subtle nod of the head or some other sign when he agrees with our arguments. As soon as we get this consent, we say that his personality also has certain parts that are responsible for different psychological functioning. One part is responsible for his functioning in the family, at home, the other - for his behavior at work, the third - in the therapist's office, and again we are looking for him to accept this metaphor. The moment the metaphor of the parts of the personality is accepted, the work can begin, which usually consists of six steps. It is because of this structure that the technique has been called six-step reframing.

If we talk about what a part of a personality is, then for us it is a truly personal structure, behind which there is a certain belief or value. This belief is manifested in abilities and capabilities, and those, accordingly, are manifested in behavior - thus, it is a piece of the pyramid of logical levels.

For six-step reframing, almost any request is suitable, any behavior that is not understandable to a person (as a rule, destructive), any symptom (psychosomatic problems can be taken), repetitive life situations (frequent physical injuries, constant failures in personal life, etc.) ...

The technique has this name because with its help we change the frame of perception in the same way as in ordinary reframing; we change the point of view on behavior and change the behavior itself, because we looked at its cause differently.

Description of the technique

First step

Determine the strategy, behavior, symptom that the patient wants to change.

Second step

Ask the patient to establish contact with the part of the personality that is responsible for this behavior. Offer to go inward and look for the part responsible for this behavior: ask her where she is; is ready to communicate with him about this behavior. Answers can come in any representational system - as an image, an inner voice, or a sensation. Thank this part of the person for their cooperation.

Third step

Separate the behavior from the positive intent of the part. Invite the patient to ask the part what good she wants to do for him through this behavior, what is her positive intention. Thank the part for such a desire. Ask the part if she is willing to change her behavior while maintaining a positive intention. Explain to her that the previous behavior is a problem. Thank the part for agreeing.

Fourth step

Invite the patient to look for her creative part (the part responsible for novelty), ask her to create several different behaviors that would be appropriate to satisfy the intent of the first part (responsible for the problem behavior). Make sure the options appear non-judgmental. The patient's task is only to accept them without criticism. Multiple variants are preferred. Thank the creative part for their help.

Fifth step

Ask the patient to present the options suggested by the creative part for the first part. Let her invite her to choose appropriate behaviors instead of the previous one and accept them as action in appropriate situations. Thank part.

Sixth step

Invite the patient to ask the first part to be quiet and ask her if there are other parts of the personality that object to one or more of the new behaviors. If there are objections, ask what behavior these objections are against, how fundamental they are (categorical objections or recommendations for improvement). It is possible to negotiate between the opposing part and the first part. If there is no objection, ask the first part to show the patient how he will behave in the future (especially in the next 3-5 weeks). Conduct an environmental audit and join the future.

The main point of technology is to dissociate a person from disturbing behavior. If we recall the basic premise of NLP - "There is a positive intention behind every behavior" - then the essence of the technique is to change the behavior itself, while maintaining a positive intention.

It is for this that the metaphors of the part of the personality are used. At the same time, it is convenient that it is part of the personality that is responsible for the behavior, and not the entire personality of the patient. This allows for a dialogue between them, during which the patient usually plunges into a shallow trance state. The trance state is also our goal, because it is in this state that a person receives unexpected answers due to the partial removal of the control of consciousness. The state of trance is facilitated by a person's deepening into himself, identifying various parts of the personality - first problematic, then creative, then other parts, which helps to perform the technique well. Therefore, it is desirable to stimulate trance. For this, simple methods are used, which include: the habit of not looking for the patient's gaze, that is, looking away from him; the ability to speak clearly, but in a fairly measured voice, using the words and expressions of the patient; creating pauses in your speech; if possible, no gestures. Especially important is the idea of six-step reframing to preserve positive intention (that is, a person's belief) and, based on it, transform behavior. Thus, we fix the preservation of the level of beliefs and values and cut off from it the level of abilities and capabilities that we change.
