A large-scale cyberattack has engulfed two countries in North America.

The FBI and CISA reported that Chinese hackers broke into the systems of American commercial telecommunications companies. The agencies notified the affected organizations of the security breach and provided them with technical support, as well as alerting other potential targets to an increase in cyber activity.

It is reported that the attack affected devices belonging to vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump and senatorial candidate Jay D. Vance. At the moment, the investigation is ongoing, and few details have been presented to the public.

In early October, it became known that the Chinese hacker group Salt Typhoon gained access to the systems of several American Internet providers, including Verizon, AT&T and Lumen Technologies. As noted, the purpose of the operation was reconnaissance, and the attackers penetrated the communications interception system, which the companies maintain to assist law enforcement. The FBI said it could not provide further comment beyond formal notification. CISA did not comment.

Similar cyberespionage activity has been observed in Canada, which has also come under the gun of cyberattacks sponsored by Chinese government agencies. The Canadian government has announced that Chinese hackers have been conducting large-scale network scans targeting various organizations in recent months. Victims included federal government agencies, political parties, parliament, critical infrastructure, media, think tanks, and NGOs.

According to Canadian authorities, the scans were reconnaissance in nature and were not direct hacks. However, the government recommends that all significant organizations in the country strengthen security measures, including the use of multi-factor authentication, logging, traffic monitoring, and anti-phishing drills.
