The world's first Olympiad on artificial intelligence for schoolchildren was won by Russians. Our team had to receive medals under the flag of the Central University, and not under the national flag of Russia.
Victory of the Russian team
At the first-ever International Olympiad on Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) among high school students, which was held from August 9 to 14, 2024 in Bulgaria, the Russian team left behind teams from 39 countries, the Ministry of Digital Development reported in its Telegram channel, in a post created with the help of AI.
The Russian team consisting of Nikita Kurlaev, Andrey Gritsaev, Andrey Gromyko and Anastasia Gainullina won gold medals in the scientific round of the competition, received silver in the practical stage and became the first in terms of points for both stages, the ministry said in a statement. However, on the website of the Olympiad, the Russian team is called the Letovo team. The national flag of Russia was not allowed to participate in the competition, and "Letovo" is the name of the Moscow school, whose students and graduates took part in the competition and received medals.
In a message from the Russian Government, also in Telegram, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko congratulated Russian schoolchildren: "You have proved to yourself and the whole world that Russia is in the reliable hands of the future generation, ready to solve the most difficult problems and open new horizons in the field of technology."
The Ministry of Digital Development also wished the Russians victory at the next AI Olympiad in China.
Our national team was trained by the Central University. This is the first university in Russia, as indicated on the website of T-Bank, based on the STEM model (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), created with the support of the largest Russian companies: Tinkoff, Positive Technologies, VK, MTS, etc.
How were the competitions held
The science tour included three tasks simulating real scientific research in the field of AI. They required programming skills, knowledge of Python libraries, and an understanding of the basics of machine learning. The Russian team scored the absolute majority of competitive points in this round.
At the practical stage, the teams were engaged in developing and conducting experiments on the behavior of AI software: ChatGPT, Dalle-2, etc.
In addition to the Russian national team, schoolchildren from China, Japan, Canada, Sweden, the Netherlands, the USA and others took part in the final.
Other Russian successes in IT competitions
At the 2023 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Hungary, Russian schoolchildren also shone — they received four gold medals out of four possible ones. In 2021 and 2022, we had three gold and one silver medals each.
In 2023, our team also had to compete under a neutral flag. The national flag of Russia was not allowed to enter the competition. The winners were Gimran Abdullin, boarding school No. 2, Kazan; Ivan Piskarev, school No. 2086, Moscow; Valery Rodionov, Lyceum named after N. I. Lobachevsky of KFU, Kazan; Anton Stepanov, Lyceum "Second School" named after V. F. Ovchinnikov, Moscow.
In April 2024, CNews reported on the victory of students of the Faculty of Computer Science, founded jointly by Yandex and the National Research University Higher School of Economics, at the 47th final of the ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) World Programming Championship for 2023. Russians also received gold medals in the 46th final. The last stages of the championship immediately for 2022-2023 (46 and 47 finals, respectively) were held in the Egyptian city of Luxor from April 14 to 19, 2024.
