The FBI and other counterintelligence agencies warn that government-sponsored cyber spies are actively trying to steal research and trade secrets from companies associated with the US space industry.

On Friday, the FBI, the National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC), and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) issued a two-page bulletin titled "Securing the U.S. Space Industry," naming Beijing and Moscow as the top threats. A U.S. counterintelligence official told Reuters:"We expect an increase in threats to this new sector of the U.S. economy."

According to the bulletin, space is key for all aspects of society, including emergency services, energy, financial services, telecommunications, transportation and agriculture, as they all rely on space services.

The information shows that foreign threats use cyber attacks and other methods to gain access to sensitive US information and pass it on to their governments. In some cases, foreign Countries invest in joint ventures and / or acquisitions, including targeted supply chain links.

Space companies have been advised to contact the FBI or AFOSI if they are suspected of being targeted and carefully monitor "strange incidents" by installing "internal threat" programs to screen individuals in sensitive positions.

Washington's warnings are growing stronger as the US space industry increases its spending on developing new rockets and other technologies. The global space economy is expected to grow from $469 billion in 2021 to more than $1 trillion by 2030, with the United States as the main driver of this growth.

"Foreign intelligence agencies see American space innovations and assets as potential threats, as well as valuable opportunities to acquire important technologies and expertise," the report says. Exploiting the American space industry could ultimately harm the national and economic security of the United States.
