Issuing banks that issue plastic cards are trying to maximize their security. The security technologies used both in the manufacture and operation of cards are constantly being improved. This is beneficial to everyone: both banks and holders, since in some problem situations the bank bears responsibility for the loss of money. But banks cannot guarantee the safety of using a bank card if its user does not follow the rules for using a bank card.

The information that the cardholder needs to know for its safe use, taking into account the comments recommendations of bank, can be found below. After all, any problem is easier to prevent than to fix. We recommend that you return to it from time to time and refresh your memory in order not to get into “uncomfortable” situations and to ensure the safety of your money on card accounts.

We also recommend starting the study of the proposed information with an article on the appearance of a bank card, where each of its elements is described - useful for general development.

General rules for the use of bank cards

1. When issuing a card at a bank, the holder signs on its back, on a specially designed signature strip. Thus, he “certifies” the plastic with his signature. Although this is more of a formality than a real protection against fraud, sometimes in a store a card without a signature will simply not be accepted for payment - these are the rules!

2. Remember the pin code and do not share it with ANYONE. This code is in a sealed envelope that is issued with the card. There you will also find the card account number (not to be confused with the card number!). In some banks (for example, in Sberbank) you will be given the opportunity to come up with a code yourself and immediately enter it in a reader, do not say it out loud. Once again - only the cardholder should know the value of the PIN code!

A small remark. Formally, the owner of the card is the bank that issued it, it does not belong to you - you are its temporary holder (until its expiration date). But often the cardholder is called its owner - let's turn a blind eye to that!

3. The payment card must be used only by its owner. If you need to transfer it to a relative or stranger, then in most cases the bank can offer to issue an additional card, which will be linked to the account of your main card. Moreover, you will be able to control expenses on it, set limits, etc. An example is the issuance of an additional card for an imperfect child or the possibility of issuing an additional one. cards to the Sberbank social card for pensioners, which will allow a relative to withdraw money from an ATM if the pensioner himself receives a pension on the bank card.

4. Keep the phone numbers of the bank's customer support service and the code word recorded in the contract in a safe and, what is important, in a quickly accessible place. Bank contacts are usually present on the card itself, but if you lose it (it is stolen or "eaten" by an ATM), then it is important to call the bank in a timely manner and block the card. Therefore, drive the contacts into your cell phone along with the code word - it may be required for your identification when talking with a contact center employee. Use the contact information indicated in the official (!) Documents issued by the bank itself, so as not to fall for fraudsters.

5. Keep secret card information (number, expiration date, CVC2 / CVV2 secret code, pin code, etc.). When you call the bank, you will be asked for your full name, passport details and control information. If suddenly you are asked for a pin code, or CVC2 / CVV2 code (the last three digits on the back of the card), these are scammers! Make sure the number you are calling really belongs to the bank.

6. Never send anything anywhere! Banks do not send e-mails and SMS with requests to provide confidential information or go to the website address. Do not open such emails, this is a scam. If you receive suspicious calls or SMS related to a payment card, contact the bank's support service.

7. Reissue the card in a timely manner. Before the card expires, it is required to submit an application for its re-issue to the bank. In some cases, the bank will reissue the card automatically. In any case, if suddenly something is wrong with the card - see if it is expired!

8. Close unused credit or overdraft debit cards. Why do you need extra costs and problems, take care to properly close your unused card.

9. Do not expose the card to corrosive environments and keep them away from magnets. A modern card has an electronic chip and a magnetic stripe - do not allow liquid to get on it, do not leave it near sources of heat and magnetic waves (heater, mobile phone, household or office equipment). Do not carry in a bag with a magnetic closure or place on metal surfaces. Plastic does not have anti-vandal protection - try not to scratch it and use it as intended.

10. Control the balance of funds on the card account, and its "physical" availability. Do not put the card in public places (car, work office).

11. Use the possibilities provided by the bank to limit the amount of withdrawal of funds per day or the amount of transfer - in case of theft.

12. Be sure to activate the SMS-notification service about changes in the balance and each transaction performed on the account (even if it is paid). This way you can always monitor the status of your account and take timely action in case of suspicious transactions.

13. Make the mandatory monthly credit card payment on time. Do not delay repayment, otherwise the loan will be repaid for a very long time, and do not make the payment on the last day (it is better to do this in 2-3 days). It is advisable to deposit funds in "native" ATMs with the function of accepting cash or at the cash desk. So there will be no commission, and the delay in the transfer of funds to the credit account will be minimal.

Safe use of a payment card at an ATM
1. Apply for advice on the operation of an ATM or terminal only to the bank employees.

2. Use ATM machines in a government office, shopping mall, hotel, airport, ie. in places with increased security control. An ideal option is an ATM installed in the bank branch itself.

3. If you use an ATM outside, be extremely careful. Examine the ATM carefully and make sure that its elements are aligned, and that there are no foreign objects (for example, traces of glue from overlay elements) on the keyboard, in the slot for the card and in the case. Do not withdraw money if you are suspicious of the people around you.

4. Some ATMs provide the ability to change the PIN code if the sequence of 4 digits issued by the bank does not suit you for something. Why not take this opportunity?

5. When entering a PIN code at an ATM, you can make a mistake no more than 3 times. After 3 attempts, the card is blocked, up to the point that the ATM can pick it up. In such a situation, you need to contact the bank. If the ATM took the card at the branch, then it is enough to inform the employee about it and with a high degree of probability the ATM will be opened and you will be given a card according to your passport. If you can't remember the pin code at all, then the only option is to reissue the card. In this case, the account will remain the same - the money will not go anywhere.

6. When entering your pin code, cover the keys with your hand. Thus, you hide your code not only from prying eyes, but also from the lens of a video camera, possibly installed by a fraudster.

7. Do not use devices that require a PIN code to access the ATM cab.

8. If the card “does not go” into the slot of the ATM, do not force it in, use another device. Also, use another ATM if the device does not work correctly (long loading).

9. If you withdraw a large amount, then there is no point in counting money right at the ATM - this way you will only attract attention. Even if the ATM makes a mistake, which is extremely rare (for example, a software failure), the situation cannot be immediately corrected. Apply with the application and the check (it is better to make a copy) to the bank. The shortage will definitely be found and your money will be returned to you.

10. Keep receipts for debit and credit transactions in ATMs for at least 6 months - they may come in handy.

The list of rules for payment for goods and services by card in shops and retail outlets
1. The seller has the right to require a passport to certify the owner when paying with a plastic card.

2. If the store does not inspire confidence (for example, it is a stall on the outskirts), it is better not to pay by non-cash method.

3. The seller should carry out any manipulations with your card only under your direct supervision. In no case should you tell the cashier the pin code - learn to use the card. The maximum that may be required is to voice the last 4 digits of the card number (for cards without a chip). When paying for lunch in a cafe or restaurant, do not give the waiter the card, but accompany him to the checkout.

4. After the settlement for the goods, it is necessary to check the receipt for the correspondence of the withdrawal amount to the purchase amount. In some cases, the check must be signed (on chip cards, the signature is replaced by entering a pin code).

5. If the goods need to be returned to the store, the return is made on the basis of a receipt, so it is highly advisable to keep it for a while.

6. Be sure to keep a copy of the receipt in case of unsuccessful payment with a plastic card. Subsequently, it can be verified that this transaction is indeed missing from the card statement and there has been no double write-off.

Cashless payment by card via the Internet
1. Do not publish on the Internet and do not send e-mail information about the card account, limit, operations, etc. For example, if you write a question or comment on the banking forum, do not "shine" the card number and its other details.

2. The PIN code is used only in ATMs and similar devices. It never applies to online payments (it just isn't provided). For payments on the Internet, the so-called CVV2 / CVC2 authentication code is required, which is located on the back of the card.

3. Do not use suspicious sites. The address of the Internet resource must be correct and use secure information transfer protocols. Fraudsters use similar Internet sites, creating duplicate resources that have the same design as the original site to extract your card details. This type of fraudulent activity is called phishing.

4. Pay for goods only on your computer. It is better not to make Internet payments on someone else's computer. data may be stored and used for fraudulent purposes.

5. Buy only from reputable internet sites that use a secure data transfer protocol during the payment process. When you go to the payment page, be sure to pay attention to the top line in the browser with the address. The address bar must start with HTTPS, which indicates a secure protocol. Usually this inscription appears on a colored background or a closed green lock appears to the left of it (it depends on the browser used).

6. Use a well-known anti-virus program on your computer and update it regularly.

7. It is safe to have a separate card with a limited limit for payments on the Internet or get a virtual card to which you transfer the amount sufficient for a purchase. This way you will secure your money on your card.

Recently, with the availability of smartphones, people have begun to actively use mobile applications of various banks. Needless to say, you should only download these programs from official sources and monitor the "cleanliness" of your phone: do not install unverified programs and do not neglect antivirus software. Update not only the antivirus, but also the operating system (if possible) - as a rule, many "vulnerabilities" go away with a new version of the operating system.

Do not leave your phone unattended and, if possible, block access to it with a password. Banks also recommend not to use Internet banking services through the browser of a mobile phone if an SMS message comes to it with a confirmation one-time password. In general, be on the lookout and follow the basic rules for the safe use of your cards, then your money will remain safe and sound.
