Anna:
My son started a strange story at school with electronic wallets. Pupils register something, send money to each other. The son said it was a business game. The situation was alarming, I felt a catch.
I talked with other parents, found out that the scheme of the "game" is as follows: an amount comes to the wallet, the money needs to be transferred to the specified number, the sender receives a percentage. The mechanism seems to be simple, but it is clearly a scam. I don't understand what to do and how to influence. I'm worried.

Financial Culture Expert:
The type of fraud that Anna describes is financial intermediation. The goal is to hide the source of the money. The organizer places an advertisement for work on the Internet, those who want to make money respond to it. People who need additional earnings - schoolchildren, pensioners - answer more often.
The contractor registers an electronic wallet, enters passport data and transfers money according to the details specified by the organizer. For this he receives a percentage of the amount. Communication with the employer takes place in messengers, social networks or forums. The participant may be promised a higher income if he attracts friends.
Such a scheme serves to legalize funds or fraudulent transfers. The organizer uses an anonymous electronic wallet, and members of the organized network register wallets, indicating their authentic personal data. In the event of a criminal investigation, the perpetrators become prime suspects. According to Criminal Code, fraud using electronic means of payment is punishable by imprisonment for up to 3 years.

What to do if someone tries to involve you in financial intermediation
  • Do not carry out other people's orders related to the transfer of money to an electronic wallet.
  • Save the contacts of people who have contacted you and screenshots of the correspondence. Copies can serve as evidence for the police.
  • Contact the police: if the scheme becomes known, it will save other people from falling into similar situations. By the same logic, it is useful to describe in detail on social networks how scammers work and ask friends to share this information.
