The price of the company's inaction is stolen customer identities.

The RansomHub group claimed responsibility for the April cyberattack on one of the largest telecommunications companies, Frontier Communications. Hackers broke into the operator's systems and stole confidential data of more than 2 million subscribers, including names, addresses, social security numbers and credit ratings.

According to the hackers themselves, they tried unsuccessfully for two months to bring Frontier to ransom negotiations, but did not receive a response. Without waiting for a response, the cybercriminals made the stolen information publicly available on a leak site, according to security researcher Brett Callow.

For its part, Frontier Communications confirmed the cyberattack in an April report to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The company reported unauthorized access to IT systems on April 14 and measures taken to contain the threat, including disabling a number of services. The temporary shutdown of the systems caused major operational disruptions, which Frontier representatives described as "significant."

An investigation of the incident revealed that an experienced cybercrime group was behind the attack, which gained access to the personal data of customers of the telecommunications giant. The threat of leaking such an impressive array of confidential information puts the security of millions of Americans and their financial well-being at risk.
