Q-Day is coming — the moment when super-powerful quantum computers will be able to crack the ciphers that protect our digital data. We are talking about ciphers that encode information in public networks and ensure the security of banks, government agencies and large commercial organizations.

Cybersecurity experts disagree on when Q-Day will arrive. Some predict that this will happen sometime in the middle of the century.

According to Thilo Kuntz, executive vice president of the Canadian cybersecurity firm Quantum Defen5e, Quantum Day could come as early as 2025. He recently stated this to representatives of the US Department of Defense.

Quantum computers are much more powerful than conventional computers because they use the properties of subatomic particles to perform complex calculations. They can perform calculations that are unthinkable for today's machines, and process information at a much faster rate. Their emergence could be "as significant for the twenty-first century as the development of electricity in the nineteenth century," according to Michael Birkuk, founder and CEO of Q-CTRL.

The main problem now is that qubits — the key processing units in quantum computers — are not stable enough to decipher large amounts of data. Therefore, existing quantum computers are still quite small and have limited power.

The world's superpowers are investing heavily in research in this area. In 2022, the United States invested $ 1.8 billion in quantum research, and Canada invested an additional $ 100 million. China has already invested more than $ 15 billion in developing the breakthrough technology.

Who gets to the finish line first is a big question. But the country that does this will have a huge advantage over competing countries and large international companies.
