Putin decided to take the online gaming market under control.
Vladimir Putin expressed support for the initiative proposed by the President of the International Boxing Association, Umar Kremlev, to move the servers of foreign developers of online games to Russia. Currently, the online gaming market in Russia is controlled by four American and one Canadian companies, while there are no Russian companies in this segment.
Kremlev pointed out that now the turnover from online games, which is displayed through the .com domain, is about $5 billion. He suggested that Internet games should be included in a single regulatory system, so that all software and servers should be located on the territory of the Russian Federation. It was also noted that some Internet games spread anti-state values.
Kremlev also expressed the idea of creating a universal regulator for games with the ability to block them. In his opinion, companies seeking to operate in the Russian market should register their games in the .ru domain, host software and servers in Russia and have an office here.
Putin stressed the importance of this initiative, saying: "Indeed, we should have servers. We love both Canada and the United States, but to earn something from us, especially in such a negative way-why do we allow it?"
According to Forbes, 11.5 million Russians participate in competitive video games, spending an average of $22.3 per month. This creates a market of $3.1 billion a year. Rosfinmonitoring also noted that it monitors transactions for the purchase of currencies in games due to possible use for criminal purposes.
