Google helps protect important cultural and scientific projects.

Since 2013, Google has been helping protect news, human rights, and election-related organizations from distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks through Project Shield. This initiative aims to make online content accessible to all users. The solution helped keep resources available for elections, supported news websites during important geopolitical events, and provided assistance to governments in times of crisis.

Google announced the expansion of the criteria for participation in Project Shield, now the program supports and protects organizations representing marginalized groups, as well as non-profit organizations that support the arts and sciences. These groups are often victims of attacks and censorship attempts, and DDoS attacks are a common tool for cybercriminals. These organizations can now get free DDoS protection for their websites through Project Shield.

Project Shield is powered by Google Cloud technologies. The solution integrates Google's global network, load balancing, cloud CDN, and Cloud Armor system. All of these technologies work together to block attacks, cache content, and deliver it to users at various points on the edge of the Google network.

These technologies that power Project Shield are also used to protect key Google services such as Search, Maps, and Gmail. Load balancing helps not only to protect the site, but also to improve its performance, providing users with fast and reliable access. In the event of a threat, Cloud Armor blocks malicious traffic at the edge of Google's infrastructure, while the CDN caches content, reducing server load and protecting the site from mass attacks.

The process of setting up protection through Project Shield takes only a few minutes, and new organizations can apply through the program website. The protection is set up quickly and efficiently, ensuring security even during sudden traffic spikes, such as Election Day.

For organizations that do not qualify for Project Shield, similar Google Cloud Networking technologies are available and can be configured through the Google Cloud Console.
