Black and white hats are invited to create a security policy.

At the DEF CON 2024 conference, a new ambitious project called "Franklin" was launched, which is aimed at attracting information security specialists to create policies in the field of critical infrastructure protection.

The Franklin project has two main objectives:

1. Release of the annual Hacker's Almanac, which will include the most important critical infrastructure security issues identified at the conference. Such a document is intended to give hackers the ability to influence national security and foreign policy discussions. The creators of the project are actively engaged in the search and analysis of data obtained at DEF CON in order to include them in the future "Almanac".

However, there are some difficulties here. Hackers are great at breaking into systems, but creating documentation is a much more complex task. There is a lot of work to be done to translate technical findings into a language that is understandable to a wide audience, as well as to collect researchers opinions and verify the results of the work.

2. Draw the attention of legislators and policy experts to cybersecurity issues in order to form a resource that will serve as a basis for developing new laws to protect critical infrastructure.

Interestingly, the Franklin Project also pays tribute to Benjamin Franklin, who created the first volunteer fire brigade in the United States. In this context, the initiative seeks to gather an army of volunteer hackers and cybersecurity specialists to help protect poorly funded critical infrastructure such as water supply and school systems. Currently, registration of volunteers has already begun, and the interest in the project from the community has been significant.
