Employees of the Department for Organizing the fight against the illegal use of information and Communication Technologies of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the city of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region detained two suspects in fraud.

"It is established that at the beginning of last year, a 19-year-old unemployed resident of Voronezh in a closed channel of one of the messengers met a peer from St. Petersburg and offered him to implement a criminal scheme for easy earnings.

One of the accomplices imitated an interest in purchasing goods placed on popular online shopping sites. Communicating with sellers, he offered to send a video image of the product to the chat, ostensibly to evaluate the appearance. Then the correspondence was continued by his accomplice, who urged him to use the Secure Transaction service to receive payment.

When sellers clicked on the link suggested by the attacker, they were taken to a phishing site. Under the guise of representatives of the technical service of the Internet resource, scammers learned digital codes from SMS notifications received from the bank. As a result, they not only did not receive payment for the goods, but also lost their savings," said Irina Volk, an official representative of the Russian Interior Ministry.

The money was repeatedly debited from the current accounts of sellers and transferred to bank accounts issued to front persons. In the future, the funds were transferred to cryptocurrency wallets and distributed among accomplices.

Currently, five victims have been identified. These are residents of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region.

"Investigators of territorial divisions of the internal affairs bodies initiated five criminal cases on the grounds of crimes under Articles 158, 159 and 159.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

During searches at the residential addresses of the detainees, laptops, cell phones, tablets, Wi-Fi routers, bank, SIM and flash cards, as well as 465 thousand rubles in cash were seized.

The defendants were taken into custody. The preliminary investigation continues, " Iryna Volk said.
