Russian police have begun testing compact video recorders with face recognition. According to Vedomosti, the video recorders are the development of NtechLab, whose shareholders include a subsidiary of the state corporation Rostec. A representative of the developer company confirmed the creation of such a gadget for security officials and security guards, specifying that the device may also be of interest to the Russian Guard and border guards.

The camera is similar to a walkie-talkie, but slightly smaller, and is attached to clothing. The gadget analyzes the video stream, highlighting people's faces from it, then using Wi-Fi or the Internet via a SIM card, the data is sent to the server. After that, the received images are checked against the available databases. If the photos match, the system will send a signal to the device. The received information will be displayed on the screen of the device. The camera will be able to recognize faces at a distance of 3.5–4.5 m.

One of the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that if the tests of the new devices are successful, then the face recognition function will be introduced into the portable video recorders that are now used by the police.

Recall that Sberbank recently proposed to provide developers of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with simplified access to city streaming data, in particular to video surveillance materials. And also provide conditions for access to them so that developers can form data sets and use them without violating privacy.

In San Francisco, by contrast, authorities decided to meet the public protesting against the uncontrolled use of street video surveillance by banning police and other departments from using facial recognition systems in the city. The local government decree prohibits the use of both the technology itself and information obtained from external systems that use the technology.
