Software artist Everest Pipkin has developed the Image Scrubber tool to make it easier to blur people's faces in photographs. Pipkin created the program right after activists began urging people not to take photographs of the faces of protesters in the United States, so that the authorities could not identify them.

Image Scrubber is designed for use on mobile devices, but also works in a browser.

“This is a tool for anonymizing photos taken during protests. It removes identifying metadata (Exif data) from photos and also allows the user to selectively blur parts of the image to hide faces and other identifiable information. Click or drag on the open button to open the photo, ”the program's website says.

To launch Image Scrubber, the user needs to select the Open image menu item at the top of the screen and click on the desired photo in the pop-up window. The program is also capable of displaying and deleting metadata such as the location where the photo was taken or the mobile device used.

According to the developer of the application, the program does not send user information anywhere, and the process of processing photos takes place on the device.
