Phishing attacks continue to cause significant losses for cryptocurrency holders. In September, more than 10,000 victims of scammers lost more than $46 million, according to web3 platform Scam Sniffer. In the third quarter of 2024, the total losses from phishing attacks amounted to $126 million.

The most notable loss was the loss of 12,083 spWETH tokens, which were stolen by scammers on September 28. First, the criminals transferred 10,000 spWETH to one of their wallets, and then more than 2,000 tokens were moved to four other addresses.

In another case, a victim lost almost $1 million after copying the wrong address from an infected transfer history. Interestingly, a few hours earlier, the investor sent about 200 ETH to the correct address. However, during the repeated transaction, he copied the phishing address and transferred 410 ETH to the scammers.

Phishing attacks typically involve criminals tricking victims into revealing sensitive information. Fraudsters also use malicious URLs to steal data.

Most often, potential victims find phishing links in fake or compromised social media accounts or through ads on popular search engines, according to web3 platform Scam Sniffer.
