From Military secrecy to the Dark Web: the story of Markis Hooper.

A court has sentenced former US Navy officer Marquis Hooper to five years and five months in prison for illegally accessing and selling personal information of US citizens on the darknet. His wife, Natasha Renee Chok, is also charged with the crime and is awaiting sentencing.

According to court documents, in August 2018, Marquis Hooper opened an online account with a company that manages a vast database containing the personal information of millions of people, and provides access to it only to commercial and government organizations that have a legitimate need for such information (PII). PII is an abbreviation that means "personal information that allows you to identify a specific person".

Hooper resorted to subterfuges, claiming that the Seventh Fleet, where he served until October 2018, needs access to a database to check the biographies of military personnel. Later, he transferred access to the account to his wife, and they illegally obtained the personal data of 9,000 people, who sold about $ 160,000 worth of bitcoins on the darknet.

According to the investigation, in many cases, buyers of stolen data used them to commit crimes. For example, one customer created a fake driver's license and tried to withdraw money from the victim's account.

In December 2018, Hooper's account was suspended due to suspected fraud. However, he tried to get new access through an accomplice, offering the latter $ 2,500 per month for "renting" a new account. But stricter verification procedures prevented him from completing the task.

Hooper and his wife were charged in February 2021, and in March 2023, he pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to commit fraud by electronic means.

Chalke's sentence is due to be announced on November 20, 2023. She faces up to 20 years in prison and a $ 250,000 fine.
