Find out what the Pentagon thinks about China's cyber power.

According to the US Department of Defense, the Chinese army faces shortcomings in situations where access to and control of the electromagnetic spectrum is a matter of fierce struggle. The electromagnetic spectrum plays a key role in modern conflicts, as its manipulation allows navigation, communication, deception, and even weapon control. It is expected that in the clash of world powers, there will be a lot of electronic interference and signal substitution.

China is aware of its weaknesses and is trying to eliminate them, a senior US defense official said, commenting on the report on China's military power for 2023. This document is published annually and provides the public with a detailed analysis of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and Beijing's modernization goals.

In 2015, China created a Strategic Support Force, centralizing its efforts in space, information, cyberwarfare, and electronic warfare. In addition, the PLA is actively developing a tactic known as the"system destruction war." This means that wars are no longer focused solely on destroying enemy troops. Victory goes to the side that can disrupt, paralyze, or completely destroy the enemy's networks and infrastructure.

The Pentagon noted that the Chinese armed forces "continue to try to improve their cyberwarfare and electronic arsenals." Both the US and China are integrating electronic warfare into military exercises. The latter uses these capabilities to test the understanding of interference systems and procedures, as well as to evaluate advances in research and development.

"The PLA sees space, cyber warfare and electronic warfare as closely related areas," the official said. "They've been writing about a concept called integrated networked electronic warfare for years."
