The two giants intend to compete with Apple in the ARM chip market.
Nvidia has started creating processors based on the ARM architecture, designed for personal computers running the Windows operating system. According to Reuters, Nvidia's competitor Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) also announced similar plans. It is expected that mass production of these processors may begin as early as 2025.
According to Reuters sources, such actions by Nvidia are consistent with Microsoft's efforts to promote the development of ARM processors for computers running Windows. The collaboration between Nvidia and AMD could lead to significant changes in the PC industry, which has long been controlled by Intel. Currently, this market is also feeling the influence of Apple, which has released its own ARM chips for Mac computers. According to one of the sources, the management of Microsoft closely monitors the successful experience of Apple and hopes to achieve similar efficiency.
As Reuters reminds, in 2016, Microsoft signed an agreement with Qualcomm to develop chips compatible with Windows. This agreement expires in 2024, and Microsoft is actively supporting other manufacturers by encouraging them to enter the market after that date. According to the agency, Qualcomm is likely to introduce its ARM PC chip called Snapdragon X Elite in the coming days.
Microsoft is also encouraging chip makers to implement artificial intelligence features in their designs. The company expects that software with advanced artificial intelligence, such as Copilot, will become increasingly popular in the Windows operating system. However, the transition from x86 to ARM may introduce some difficulties, since the code developed for x86 is not compatible with the ARM architecture, which can potentially cause problems and additional costs.
On the back of the report from Reuters, Nvidia shares rose 4.4%, while Intel shares fell 2.9%. ARM shares were up 3.4% in after-hours trading.
