Each country has its own preferred payment methods. Of course, credit cards and PayPal are popular in many parts of the world. But do you know which online payment method the Germans prefer? And which is more commonly used in the Netherlands - credit cards or direct debit? Some of these questions are answered in the infographic below.

The most used payment methods were analyzed by Expert Market, a trading platform that allows companies to find the best suppliers. The research used data provided by the payment company Adyen. As can be seen on the map, settlements using Visa / MasterCard credit and debit cards prevail around the world. These are the most popular online payment methods.

But if we look at the map of Europe, it becomes clear that there is a lot more variety in payment methods. Credit cards are the most popular here, as well as all over the world. For example, in Italy, 83% of online transactions are carried out using Visa or Mastercard, which is much more than using PayPal (13%) or American Express (4%). In Spain, the popularity of these cards is even higher - 91% of users pay online with a Visa or Mastercard. However, in Poland, the popularity of credit cards is much lower - 45% of online shoppers prefer this method of payment. At the same time, online banking almost caught up with it in popularity (35%). It is followed by cash (15%) and PayPal (5%).

In Germany, the most preferred online payment method is ELV (short for Elektronisches Lastschriftverfahren), an electronic direct debit payment method supported by German banks. In the Netherlands, the most popular is also the local payment method - iDeal, supported by most of the state-owned banks in the country. 55% of online shoppers prefer to use iDeal when paying for online purchases.

In Turkey, paying with credit and debit cards is very popular (87%), but Visa and MasterCard are hardly ever used. PayPal is the second most popular payment method (7%), other e-wallets are also used (6%). In Russia, not only credit and debit cards are popular, but also electronic payments Qiwi, Yandex.Money and Webmoney.

In Ukraine, in turn, the market for non-cash payments is showing steady growth, experts say.
