The Brave browser violated its principles of transparency and openness.

Users of the Brave browser on the Windows operating system encountered an unexpected problem, which was reported by journalists of the GHacks publication. They found that from 2022, when installing the browser on Windows, users automatically received a VPN client, without the ability to disable it. In addition, the company did not inform users that in addition to the browser, they also download additional software.

Since the beginning of 2022, Brave has offered users the opportunity to subscribe to the Firewall + VPN tariff for $10 per month, which provides access to a proprietary firewall and VPN service. However, on Windows, a VPN client was also installed on the PC along with the browser. Users were not warned about this, so the additional software was simply on the device and turned on only after purchasing a subscription.

After criticism in the media, Brian Clifton, vice president of development and technology at Brave, said that the team will soon change the way the software is distributed. Now the VPN client and other additional software will be downloaded only after the user signs up for a subscription.

Users can now check for the presence of Brave services on their system using the Task Manager; they are designated as Brave VPN and Brave Wireguard.

While users have the option to remove these apps themselves, there is a risk that Brave may re-install them in the future. To prevent this, you need to delete the browser and install it without administrator rights. The developers promised to fix this behavior of Brave as well.
