What's going on in OpenAI labs? They are preparing something big in the world of chips.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is considering creating its own chips for artificial intelligence. As part of that research, it even evaluated potential acquisition properties, according to sources familiar with the company's plans.

At the moment, the company has not yet made a final decision on creating chips, but it is considering various options to solve the problem of the shortage of expensive AI chips on which OpenAI depends. Among the options under consideration are creating your own AI chip, strengthening cooperation with other chip manufacturers, including Nvidia, as well as expanding the range of suppliers.

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, sees acquiring more AI chips as a priority for the company. He expressed his concern about the shortage of GPUs, the market of which is 80% controlled by Nvidia.

Since 2020, OpenAI has been developing its generative artificial intelligence technologies on a powerful supercomputer created by Microsoft. This supercomputer uses 10,000 Nvidia GPUs.

The cost of running ChatGPT for a company is quite high. Each request costs approximately 4 US cents. If ChatGPT's search volume reaches one-tenth of the scale of Google's search, it will require chips worth about $ 48.1 billion at the beginning and about $ 16 billion a year to maintain operations.

Developing its own AI chips could put OpenAI among the big tech players, such as Google and Amazon, who seek to control the design of chips that are key to their businesses.

However, creating your own chip will require significant investment and does not guarantee success. Acquiring a chip manufacturer can speed up the process of creating your own chip for OpenAI.

Demand for specialized AI chips has increased since the launch of ChatGPT last year. Nvidia is one of the few manufacturers that produces efficient AI chips and dominates the market.
