Changing the name didn't help the Spyhide app evade the law.

The spy app called Oospy has stopped working. It appeared in the middle of this year after the disclosure of its predecessor, the Spyhide program, which secretly monitored tens of thousands of Android users around the world.

When the old service disappeared from the network, the spyware itself continued to work on a separate domain, which allowed administrators to rename the program to Oospy without interrupting its activity.

The app is installed on someone else's smartphone and secretly transmits any necessary information to intruders - correspondence, photos, conversation recordings, and much more. The program is not displayed on the phone's home screen – It is usually disguised as legitimate processes, so it is very difficult to detect it.

On September 5, hosting provider Hetzner shut down a server that stored confidential data stolen from tens of thousands of compromised devices. Illegal activity of operators was once again revealed.

According to experts, during the existence of Spyhide and Oospy, their activity affected at least 60,000 victims.

After hacking Spyhide, journalists managed to identify two administrators. Mohammad Arasteh, one of them, confirmed that he was involved in the development of the project several years ago, but denies any involvement in Oospy.

Interestingly, a lot of evidence points to his connection with the new espionage initiative. For example, a PayPal account (for paying for the service's services) registered with the same last name.

The "industry" of surveillance apps is going through a tough time. More and more such services are being shut down after high-profile scandals and leaks. For example, the Polish project LetMeSpy stopped working in the summer. And last year SpyTrac, one of the most famous programs for Android, was closed.
