Hackers tried to gain access to the military infrastructure, but not everything went according to plan.

A group of hackers from North Korea, known as Kimsuky, conducted a cyber attack on computer systems used for joint US-South Korean military exercises. According to Bloomberg, hackers tried to gain access to military infrastructure. As a result of the attack, the computers of Company A, which provides computer simulation services for the military exercise Freedom Shield, were compromised.

According to the security Investigation Division of the South Gyeonggi Metropolitan Police Department, in early January, hackers emailed malicious code to the computer of an administrative employee of Company A, after which they gained access to the data of other employees.

Then in February, hackers sent emails to employees providing war games with an attached file that allegedly contained information about tax deductions. However, the file didn't open thanks to the Pentagon's security system.

The investigation found that North Korean hackers failed to obtain military information. But several employees of the company forwarded emails with malicious files to their personal mailboxes and thereby infected their personal devices.

The police, together with the US military, discovered that fake IP addresses were used for the cyber attack, which were involved in 2014, when Kimsuky hacked into the South Korean hydro and nuclear power plant operator KHNP.

South Korea believes that North Korean hackers are behind Kimsuky, who act on the orders of the North Korean authorities. In this regard, Seoul added the organization to its blacklist in June. South Korean investigators also recently said they had confirmed Kimsuky's involvement in a massive phishing email distribution to South Korean foreign policy and security experts last year.

Freedom Shield is a joint military exercise between the United States and South Korea aimed at maintaining military readiness and cooperation between these countries. The exercise is a simulation of various military scenarios and strategies that may be needed to defend and defend the region. As part of Freedom Shield, participants practice coordinating their actions, joint operations, and interaction between the US and South Korean military forces.
