Millions of users of the country were left without their favorite service.

Niconico, one of the largest video hosting companies in Japan, has temporarily suspended its services due to a large-scale cyberattack. The incident occurred on Saturday, which forced the company to take measures to minimize the damage, temporarily disabling the platform for live broadcasts and user channels.

Niconico is currently investigating the incident "to fully understand the extent of the damage." As of Monday, the attack was still ongoing, and Niconico added that "it is difficult to provide any updates on future events until security is secured." In a statement, the company's representatives expressed deep apologies to users and content providers who regularly use their services.

With approximately 1.43 million premium subscribers, 89 million active users, and over 10,000 channels, Niconico is one of the largest video hosting sites in Japan. On Sunday, Kadokawa, Niconico's parent company, confirmed that the incident also affected other platforms, including its official website and e-commerce site. According to preliminary data, the reason was "unauthorized external access" to the servers.

Currently, Niconico's services remain unavailable, and the company's website indicates that maintenance is underway. In parallel, work is underway to rebuild the entire system in order to prevent similar cyber attacks in the future. The company promised to inform users later about the results of the investigation and provide answers to questions regarding membership fees and rescheduling live broadcasts.

It is unclear what type of cyberattack affected Niconico or whether the hackers demanded a ransom. Dwango, the company that manages Niconico under Kadokawa, did not respond to requests for comment. However, according to Niconico, users ' credit card information was not compromised during the incident.
