The Cybersecurity Center plans to roll out PDNS to all schools in the country over the next year.

In response to the growing threats to cybersecurity in the educational sphere, the National Cyber Security Center of the United Kingdom (NCSC) announced the launch of a new initiative designed to prevent malicious sites from being visited by users of school networks.

According to Sarah Lyons, NCSC Deputy Director for Economics and Society, the PDNS initiative for schools will be completely free of charge, and its rollout to most British schools is planned to take place over the next year.

The PDNS service for schools builds on the successful implementation of PDNS as part of the NCSC Active Cyber Defense Strategy, which was launched by Nominet, the registrar of.uk domains, in 2017 and has since functioned as a recursive resolver, blocking access to risky sites.

According to the NCSC, PDNS prevents access to domains known to be malicious by blocking them. This prevents viruses, phishing attacks, ransomware, spyware, and other threats from spreading at the initial level, thereby improving network security.

In addition, PDNS provides organizations with network health data and offers NCSC support to resolve emerging issues. The information collected from PDNS is also used to inform and support the UK Government's response to cyber incidents.

According to the NCSC 2022 survey published this January, 78% of UK schools experienced at least one type of cyber incident in the past year, with 73% of schools reporting phishing emails sent to staff or redirecting staff to fraudulent websites.

Schools that want to use the PDNS service may not take any action until the full deployment of the service is announced, which is expected in the first half of 2024.

However, local authorities in England and authorized public networks in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland that provide DNS services to schools recommend that you register in advance to use the service when it becomes available.
