Attack on one - attack on all: the alliance is ready for collective defense.

At the Shangri-La Dialogue forum held in Singapore, the head of the NATO Military Committee, Rob Bauer, said that the alliance countries agreed to use Article 5 of the Washington Collective Defense Treaty in the event of large-scale cyber attacks against them.

"In NATO, we agreed with all our allies that, in principle, a cyberattack could become... a reason to invoke Article 5," the head of the NATO Military Committee said.

Article 5 of the Washington Treaty deals with the collective defense of NATO countries, where an attack on one of the members of the alliance is considered an attack on all participating States

According to Bauer, the application of collective defense measures will require identifying the direct organizers of the cyber attack, and not just the location of the servers involved. It is also necessary to assess the scale of the attack and the extent of its devastating impact on critical infrastructure.

"If this means that critical services of our societies are compromised in such a way that societies cannot function, then we are close to the point where we can respond in a way that is close to responding to a physical attack," General Bauer explained.

On May 25, Jens Stoltenberg warned that the North Atlantic Alliance may apply the provisions of the collective self-defense treaty in response to large-scale cyber attacks, and NATO's actions will not be limited to the digital sphere.
