The browser tries to keep a balance between ads and privacy.
Mozilla has removed the Adjust integration from its Firefox and Firefox Klar (Firefox Focus) browsers for Android and iOS. SDK Adjust was used to measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns, helping Mozilla understand whether the browser was installed after ads. The data for the analysis was collected through Adjust's servers in Germany.
The reason for the removal was the discovery of the fact of collecting data on the effectiveness of Firefox advertising campaigns without properly informing users. That's why Firefox for Android no longer has the "Marketing Data" option in your data collection settings. The option, enabled by default since July 2023, allowed you to collect data on user reaction to ads, which was then aggregated to advertisers. Although users could disable the feature, enabling it without explicit consent caused a backlash.
Mozilla regrets enabling such telemetry, but defends the reason for enabling it by default. According to the company, advertisers' desire to be informed about the performance of their campaigns is very difficult to circumvent.
Mozilla disabled Adjust in Firefox 129.0.2 for Android, 129.2 for iOS, and Firefox Klar 129.2 for iOS, without specifying this in the update notes. In Firefox, Klar for Android will be disabled with the release of version 130.0.
Recall that in version 128, Firefox developers introduced a new "Privacy-preserving attribution" (PPA) feature, which collects data on user interaction with ads by default. The option allows advertisers to measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns without the use of third-party cookies. However, many were outraged that Mozilla activated the feature by default without notifying users directly.
