Where do the photos you upload to Facebook end up?

Meta has agreed to pay the state of Texas $1.4 billion to settle a lawsuit accusing the company of illegally using facial recognition technology to collect biometric data from millions of Texans without their consent.

The state accused Facebook of repeatedly collecting ("billions of times") biometric information from photos and videos by users through the "tag suggestions"feature, which has already been discontinued. The feature uses facial recognition technology to recognize the user in photos.

Meta denies wrongdoing, but expressed satisfaction with the agreement and its intention to develop its business in Texas, including the creation of data centers. The agreement was reached in May, a few weeks before the trial began.

Recall that Meta suspended the use of generative AI in Brazil after the country's supervisory authorities imposed a preliminary ban, objecting to the new privacy policy. The company decided to suspend the use of tools to address concerns of the authorities about the use of GenAI technology.
